Raid in St. Pauli

‘Razzia in St. Pauli’, GER 1932, directed by Werner Hochbaum, 63 min, with English subtitles, rating: age 6 and up

‘Raid in St Pauli’ takes place in the red-light district of Hamburg’s port, where Else, a sex worker, lives with Leo, a bar musician. When Karl, a crook and sailor, hides from the police in Else’s apartment after burgling a jeweler, an affair develops between the two, and she begins to dream of a different life. Together Else and Karl plan an escape from their bleak existence. Werner Hochbaum’s social drama, which ends with a song by Ernst Busch about exploited dock workers, is an authentic reflection of an impoverished neighborhood, shot in rhythmic montage sequences.
