When the Russian student Ariane travels to Berlin, she meets Konstantin, a bon vivant who is considerably older than her. She responds to his advances, even though he makes it clear he is only interested in an affair. To impress him and in the hope of establishing a serious relationship with him nonetheless, she plays the part of the sophisticated woman. On a trip together to Italy, Konstantin abandons Ariane; she remains behind, feeling hurt. In this film, love is depicted as a dangerous game in which Ariane risks losing herself while trying to match the competing demands imposed on women. Although the gender roles may feel outmoded to a modern audience, lead actress Elisabeth Bergner is captivating.
