One Glance and Love Breaks Out

FRG 1986, directed by: Jutta Brückner, 85 min, with English subtitles, rating: age 16 and up

Jutta Brückner’s film deals with the “perfectly normal toxicity” of heterosexual relationships. It featured prominently at the Berlin and Venice film festivals in 1986/87 and received the German Film Critics’ Award. In seven scenes, an ensemble of dancers embodies experiences women go through in life, ranging from promises of happiness and the yearning to be loved, to sexuality, violence, jealousy, loss, and grief. In sparse, factory-like spaces, the dancers move to tango-inspired rhythms. In doing so, an connection between Latin American macho culture and Western European gender relations is established.
