Dealer

G 1999, directed by Thomas Arslan, 71 min, no subtitles, rating: 12

Can is a drug dealer in the Schöneberg district of Berlin. Together with his girlfriend Lale, he dreams of a better life with their child beyond petty crime. He’s pinning his hopes on running a bar, as promised by his boss Hakan. But when Hakan is shot dead, Can’s situation becomes even more desperate. Suddenly, he faces imprisonment and deportation. ‘Dealer’ transcends a mere depiction of an underground world, weaving an existential tale of a young second-generation German-Turk’s utter helplessness in post-reunification Berlin.
