The Architects
‘Die Architekten’, GDR 1990, directed by Peter Kahane, 107 mins, no subtitles, rating: 0
Daniel is an architect commissioned to design a cultural center for one of Berlin’s satellite towns. Together with his former fellow students, he wants to design a humane, social and cultural living space among the housing blocks, and dives eagerly into the project. While the group has to fight ongoing restrictions from higher authorities, thousands of GDR citizens stream westwards every day. The depiction of Daniel’s failure unexpectedly foreshadowed the collapse of the state system just a few months after the film’s completion.
