‘De cierta manera’ describes life in a poor neighborhood in post-revolutionary Cuba. Yolanda, an elementary school teacher, and Mario, who works in a factory, become a couple. While Yolanda strives for an educational approach that inte- grates marginalized students, causing conflict with colleagues and parents, Mario finds it difficult to let go of patriarchal role models. Their contrary ideals put their relationship to the test, while at the same time critically reflecting the process of social transformation. This was the first Cuban feature- length film directed by a woman.
The film was shot on black-and-white 16mm negative and reversal stock. The edited negative was badly damaged at the lab during the printing process. The 2K digital restoration was based on a surviving dupe negative from 2008 held at the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC). Two 35mm distribution prints held by the Arsenal cinema archive were used as a reference for density correction.
