Under the Lantern

‘Unter der Laterne. Trink, trink, Brüderlein, trink’, G, 1928, directed by Gerhard Lamprecht, 131 min, silent with English subtitles

Director Gerhard Lamprecht tells the story of a young woman’s slide into prostitution. In this social study, Lamprecht’s gaze goes deep into the milieu of those living on the fringes of society. He films in backyards, flophouses and dive bars, where the daily struggle for survival is forgotten for a few hours. He also provides a glimpse of how women during that period were financially dependent on men, a time when they were afforded the role of either virtuous wife or prostitute.

Featuring: Lissy Arna, Gerhard Dammann, Mathias Wieman, Paul Heidemann, Hubert von Meyerinck, Carla Bartheel, Max Maximilian
