Virtual tour

In 2023, an exhibition of the life and work of Werner Herzog was shown in our institute. Now you can get to know aspects of Werner Herzog’s films and selected exhibits online. Film clips and background information are also available.

Both floors of the exhibition can be explored online. Five areas are dedicated to Herzog’s cinematic work; there is also a cabinet of curiosities which displays props and found objects as well as installations that present Herzog’s view of nature and humanity. One area is devoted to the controversies surrounding the director as his work is often provocative. The last chapter introduces Herzog as an author, teacher, and cult figure.

The majority of the exhibits come from the Werner Herzog Archive. Photographs by his wife Lena Herzog supplement the exhibition material and objects from the archives of Gisela Storch-Pestalozza and Henning von Gierke are shown too.

Quick guide

Use the play button at the bottom left to go directly to the audio tour with Werner Herzog. To navigate independently, please use your mouse or cursor keys. Once a clip has started, you will find the German and English subtitles under “cc” at the bottom right.

Icons guide you around the exhibition: The blue eye means there is a film clip. The blue audio icon indicates an exhibit with sound. The yellow eye indicates a video installation, and the green book symbol indicates a written document. The white circles at the bottom mark internal links.
