Witches & Faggots, Dykes & Poofters
Si̇nema Transtopia
In 1978, Australian police violently disrupted the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, arresting fifty-three peaceful protesters. This documentary by activists uses footage from the protest and its immediate aftermath to create a raw, dynamic and politically urgent portrait. The film does not just depict direct action: it also created it, helping to catalyze lasting legal change and itself becoming part of the story of LGBTQIA+ resistance in Australia.
