A piece of the action

With: Elisa Jochum (Deutsche Kinemathek)

This fast-paced presentation discusses—and challenges—ready associations between action and film. It is designed to stimulate reflection on which associations are, by contrast, commonly overlooked. Which have historically not gotten a piece of the action? This whistle-stop tour tackles questions ranging from the colors to the noises of action, from courageous to fearful and outrageous deeds, from causes to consequences, and from its physical to its social dimensions. In doing so, this talk breaks down any restrictions on thinking of action merely within the confines of a genre.
A firework of ideas and references, this opening presentation seeks to inspire festival visitors and prepare the ground for experiencing the festival. The aim is to diversify our understanding of action in the context of film, and through this lens, of film heritage itself.
