Hungary, December 1956. Dániel Szerencsés and his friend Gyuri Angeli agree to leave the country. Dániel wants to follow his lover who has gone to Vienna while Gyuri is forced to flee because he fought in the streets during the Hungarian Revolution against the government and the Soviet occupation. Pál Sándor’s sensitive film about the aftermath of the 1956 uprising, the subsequent wave of emigration and the eternal question of whether to leave or stay won the critics’ award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1983.

About “Films of Political Change”
What can films tell us about the history of political changes? On the first Wednesday of each month, we are screening a title from international film history and inviting experts from the films’ countries of origin to discuss their significance – then and now. This series kicks off the countdown to the FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives) Congress, hosted by the Kinemathek in April 2027.
