German film history in a single volume

Over the course of just under 1,000 pages, this book guides its readers through 130 years of German film history, right up to the most recent releases. Famous films and films worthy of being rediscovered, a host of artists and the multifaceted material history of German cinema are presented and contextualized in over 400 entries enhanced by approximately 2,700 images, by around 50 different authors.

The objects brought together in this volume were taken from the archives of the Deutsche Kinemathek, and offer insights into the institution’s comprehensive collections. Hundreds of thousands of objects are permanently preserved in its archives and made available for research into the history of film and television. As well as screenplays, photographs, posters, costumes and drafts, the collections also include – among other things – cinematographic equipment.

With its concise introductions and texts about numerous specific aspects of film history, ‘German Film – From the Archives of the Deutsche Kinemathek’ highlights, among other things, the Deutsche Kinemathek’s long-lasting commitment to the preservation and presentation of our audiovisual heritage.

This book is being published in German and English, and as an e-book. Furthermore, individual EPUB versions of each of its twelve chapters are available in both languages.
