Carbide and Sorrel
‘Karbid und Sauerampfer’, GDR 1963, directed by Frank Beyer, 77 min, with English subtitles, rating: 12
The Dresden cigarette factory, where Kalle used to work, has burned down during the war. To restart production, carbide is needed to weld the machinery. Kalle procures seven barrels from the north, and takes them back on foot, sometimes hitchhiking, on a horse and cart, and in a hijacked speedboat. On the way, he gets to know Karla, but also has to outmaneuver Russian and American soldiers.
