An action-packed adaptation of Huanzhulouzhu’s novel ‘Legend of the Swordsmen of the Mountains of Shu’: The master swordsman Ting-yin has been possessed by the Blood Demon. His disciple Ti Min-chi, young monk I-chen and a disciple of the countess of the fort manage to escape Ting’s attack. Together, they embark on a journey to visit the powerful Li I-chi and ask her to save the people. Tsui Hark, pioneer of the Hong Kong New Wave, delves into the world of wuxia and fantasy for this film. For the impressive visual effects, he was able to recruit specialists who had worked on ‘Star Wars’ (1977).

Restoration info
The 4K digital restoration is based on the film negatives and the subtitled Hong Kong version. The restoration work involved extensive color grading, reduction of background noise on the soundtrack, and the insertion of original subtitles. To restore the film as closely as possible to its original look at the time of its general release, flaws like the wires behind actors and reduced sharpness due to the use of special optical effects were not corrected.
Sam Ho
is a curator, researcher, teacher, writer and critic. Based in Hong Kong and the United States, Ho specializes in the study of Hong Kong cinema and has also curated programs and written extensively on different aspects of cinema. His writing has appeared in publications, academic journals, newspapers, magazines and online. He is also involved in film education, having taught at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, as well as conducting seminars and workshops in secondary schools. Devoted to the international promotion of Hong Kong cinema, Ho has given countless lectures around the world.
