A wealthy married businessman picks up a young hitchhiker, Elsie, at the side of the road. The two begin an affair at his weekend house where he passes her off as his niece. Then Elsie meets and falls for a young local man who wants to plan a future with her. A dangerous love triangle ensues in which desire, deceit and, ultimately, a death raise the stakes. The three protagonists in this suspense-laden Finnish film noir are playing a risky game in which no one is fully laying their cards on the table.

Restoration Information

The 2023 restoration in 4K from original elements used Phoenix software to decrease screen flicker, improve stability and remove dust and scratches.

Mikko Kuutti

studied architecture and specialized in building conservation and restoration. He researched film cold storage in his master’s thesis and is fascinated by the chemistry and technology of celluloid. In 2001, he was recruited from the emerging digital post-production industry to head the collections of the Finnish Film Archive (KAVI) as its deputy director. Today, 25 years later, he is director of the audiovisual culture department in the Finnish Arts and Culture Agency (Kavi) and continues the archive’s legacy in the digital realm. During his watch, a hybrid analogue and digital film, radio and television archive has been built, with an in-house digital services unit and an extensive streaming platform in addition to an analogue element archive.
