Risk goes cult and becomes unpredictable in the Coen Brothers’ star-studded and deliciously strange crime story ‘Fargo’. In snowy Minnesota, car salesman Jerry Lundegaard sends two kidnappers after his wife in the hope that his father-in-law – and boss – will put up the ransom and thus solve Lundegaard’s precarious financial situation. Matters escalate quickly and the increasing death toll calls pregnant and unwavering police chief Marge Gunderson into action. ‘Fargo’ had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 1996 where Joel Coen took home the Best Director Award. The film went on to win two Academy Awards, a BAFTA and two Critics Choice Awards.

About Film Restored
In 2026, the Deutsche Kinemathek’s film heritage festival explores risk in cinema. We are examining the perils facing film producers and distributors; looking at the challenges encountered in archives and during restoration work; and showing films about characters who have everything at stake. These are layers of risk that often overlap and are mutually reinforcing.
