Emma Cohen, cineasta, ES 1969–1980, 88 min

Introduction: Helena de Llanos (filmmaker)
In English

‘Bartio’s First Story’ (1969), ‘The Square’ (1976), ‘I wanted to sleep in peace’ (1976), ‘Chari gets married’ (1978), ‘What do I know!’ (1980) and ‘The Seventh Day of Sun’ (1980) – a programme of six short films shows Emma Cohen’s creative, irreverent freedom as an artist and helps increase the visibility of this almost unknown director. Her films demonstrate her surrealist roots, her interest in earthly, playful and magical subject matter and her rebellion against prevailing rules and morality. Her work reflects how she strove for freedom in all areas of life. Emma Cohen’s films were the result of personal efforts, made under difficult circumstances, and resulted in a limited number of prints and minimal distribution.

The original negatives preserved in the Filmoteca Española and Filmoteca de Catalunya were used as source material after the original laboratories were shut down. The project involved 4K digitisation at the Filmoteca de Catalunya and Ocho Y Pico laboratory (José Luis Sanz).
