Workshop Report: “Restoration Process ‘The Golem: How He Came into the World’”  with Anke Wilkening (Restauratorin)

In English

After World War I, German production companies were eager to market their movies abroad. So many silent films of the Weimar era survived as export versions in international archives, while the German release versions were lost. A new 2018 restoration of Paul Wegener’s ‘The Golem: How He Came into the World’ became possible after an original negative held in the Belgian Cinematek became available.

Original format: 35 mm, 1.33:1, silent, tinted

The Holy Roman Emperor has issued a decree that Jews must vacate 16th century Prague. Rabbi Loew creates a huge figure of clay to try to avert the disaster looming over the Jewish ghetto. Although the Golem initially prevents the expulsion of the Jews, the creature ultimately turns on its maker and runs amok. This was director Paul Wegener’s third film adaptation of the Golem legend and one of the biggest financial and critical successes of German silent films.
