MISSION: EDUCATION

Screening: Everyday marvels. Harun Farocki’s children’s films, FRG, 1973–1977

OV

Original format: 16 mm, color

Screening prints: DCP, 25 min, Harun Farocki GbR und Deutsche Kinemathek, Berlin

Between 1973 and 1977, Harun Farocki directed several episodes of the TV series ‘Sesame Street’ and ‘Sandmänn- chen’. The films are everyday observations of the world. Sometimes they are educational, sometimes playful. Some- times the children – as actors and narrators – conjure up the magic of reality, and sometimes documentary observation is front and center. The films are about boats, bridges, stones, jackhammers, production, and the division of labor – everything from the marvelous to the mundane. Anna Faroqhi, who acted in some of her father’s films and is today a director, writer, and educator, will take the audience through the compilation. Recommended for children 5+.

The films were made for television and not all of them could be digitally restored. The ‘Einschlafgeschichten’ (bedtime stories) about bridges, boats, and trains were digitized by Film Shift GbR, Munich.

Introduction: Anna Faroqhi (author)
