This cinematic portrait follows former boxing star Belarmino Fragoso, as he goes about his daily business in a Lisbon that no longer exists. Solitude, fear, and defeat intersect in a film that juggles documentary, drama, and interviews as it moves through old cinema lobbies and night clubs. This first feature- length work by Fernando Lopes, with a moody jazz score by Manuel Jorge Veloso, and radiant cinematography by Augusto Cabrita, is one of the iconic films of Portuguese Cinema Novo – New Wave.
The original 35mm camera negative and a distribution print, both held at the Cinemateca Portuguesa, were scanned in 4K. The sound was scanned and restored from the optical soundtrack of a print made in 2014. Digital grading and image restoration were done by Cineric Portugal using a dis- tribution print as reference.
