Screening ‘Alvorada – Brazil’s Changing Face’, FRG, 1962, directed by Hugo Niebeling

OV

Original format: 35 mm, 1:1.37, color

Screening print: DCP, 81 min, Deutsches Filminstiut & Filmmuseum, Frankfurt am Main

‘Alvorada’ is a documentary about Brazil and the formative influence industrial and societal upheavals have had on its history. This portrait of the fifth-largest country in the world surveys its people, landscapes, and modern metropolises, well as its arts and culture. But the primary focus is on structural changes, beginning in earnest in 1956 with preparations to move the capital to the new purpose-built city of Brasilia. Seen from the perspective of European eyes, the film’s cornucopia of impressions paints a picture of a multi-cultural, diverse nation.

The digitization was done from an original 35mm picture negative and magnetic audio reels, using a print from Germany’s
federal archive for film in Berlin for replacement frames and as a reference. The 4K scan and digital processing were done at Studio Hamburg. The project was funded by the film heritage subsidy program FFE.

Introduction: Holger Ziegler (DFF – Deutsches Filminstiut & Filmmuseum)

→ Tickets: 8,50 €
