Introductory lecture by Martin Koerber (Deutsche Kinemathek)

“Harold Brown’s ‘Physical Characteristics of Early Films as Aids to Identification’” by Camille Blot-Wellens (FIAF)

Since FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives) first published it in 1990, Harold Brown’s ‘Physical Characteristics of Early Films as Aids to Identification’ has been a crucial tool for cinematheques and archives around the world. Now, 30 years later, FIAF is bringing out a new, expanded edition. In this lecture, Camille Blot-Wellens will briefly trace the origins of Brown’s publication, and present the work developed by archivists and researchers for the new edition.

“FIAF’s Unified Film Catalogues: A successful example of international cooperation between film archives” by Christophe Dupin (FIAF)

In the mid-1930s, the first emerging film archives realized that establishing international contacts and sharing films and information was essential to the development of this new field. When they formed the FIAF in 1938, sharing information about each other’s film collections became one of its founding principles. This presentation provides a brief illustrated overview of how this idea of sharing information about film holdings gradually engendered the publication of various unified film catalogues.
