Werner Herzog 360°

A virtual tour of the exhibition — with personal stories from the director in short video clips.

In 2023, our institute presented an exhibition on the life and work of Werner Herzog. This exhibition can still be visited online in a tour that shows central aspects of Herzog’s films and selected exhibits, which are supplemented by film excerpts and background information.

Both floors of the exhibition have been digitally reproduced. Five areas are dedicated to Herzog’s cinematic work; a cabinet of curiosities displays props and found objects, and installations present Herzog’s view of nature and humanity. One area deals with the controversies surrounding the director’s often provocative stance. The last section introduces Herzog as an author, teacher, and cult figure.

The majority of the exhibits come from the Werner Herzog Archive. The exhibition is supplemented by photographs by Werner Herzog’s wife Lena Herzog, as well as loans from the archives of Gisela Storch-Pestalozza and Henning von Gierke.

Click on the large play button in the middle to enter the virtual exhibition space. Click on the small play button at the bottom left to start the audio tour with Werner Herzog. This will take you through the exhibition, theme by theme. You can click on the icons at every station — the clips do not start automatically. With just one click, you can hear Herzog’s unmistakable voice.

If you would rather navigate on your own, you do not need to start the audio tour. Simply use the mouse or arrow keys to move around the room. Marks on the ground make it easier to find your way.

Subtitles in German or English can be activated using the “cc” button at the bottom right.
