Du bist nicht allein, GER 2007, directed by Bernd Böhlich, 97 min, German without subtitles, rated: 6
What to do without work? A concrete high-rise in East Berlin’s Marzahn. Unemployed painter Hans Moll shakes himself out of his lethargy when a beautiful new neighbor moves in. His wife, a former sausage sales assistant, is preparing for a new job promised to her by the job centre and has lost sight of what’s important. Even the middle classes are not spared from crises: leading roles for actress Sylvia Welk are few and far between and she keeps herself afloat as a dubbing artist, while her husband, an unemployed physicist with a PhD, twiddles his thumbs at home. In this tragicomedy, director Bernd Böhlich shows with great sympathy what happens when life goes off the rails.
