In the 1980s, nuclear power opponents occupied a drilling site in Gorleben on the border to the GDR and set up a temporary camp. The Republik Freies Wendland (Free Republic of Wendland) held the promise of a non-violent utopia rooted in solidarity for 33 days before its evacuation put an end to the dream. Activists filmed and documented the events.
