The Bridge

‘Die Brücke’, GER (East) 1949, directed by Artur Pohl, 85 min, no subtitles, rating: 0

After the war, a group of refugees from Germany’s former eastern regions arrives in a small town in central Germany, happy to have found a new home. However, the local community reacts to the strangers with suspicion, rejection, and even hatred. Michaelis, the group’s spokesman, strives for a peaceful coexistence, but is killed in an act of sabotage by local residents. When a devastating fire strikes the city, the outsiders pitch in to help fight it despite the harassment they have suffered, and thus succeed in building a bridge to peace.

Featuring: Fritz Wagner, Arno Paulsen, Steffie Spira, Albert Venohr
