The irresistibly rebellious Toni is expelled from Sofia and sent to the small town of Ruse where she meets Yordan, whose sincere nature persuades her to join him in a socialist labor brigade. As Toni attempts to adapt to this new environment, tensions within the group surface, exposing hypocrisy and moral failings. As her youthful recklessness and defiance of social norms place Toni in direct conflict with socialist expectations of collectivism, she must decide between conformity and emotional commitment or the hazardous search for a self-determined life. The film’s perspective proved to be a dangerous narrative choice, particularly when matched with its aesthetic risks and unconventional style: ‘Monday Morning’ was banned shortly after completion and was withheld from release for over two decades, until 1988.

Restoration Information

The film was restored in 2025 in 4K from the camera negative, with missing or damaged sections reconstructed using a duplicate negative. The restoration required careful integration of heterogeneous source materials, balancing differences in grain, contrast and image stability. The process aimed to preserve the film’s dynamic visual language while recovering its original tonal range and cinematographic detail.

Yoanna Nasfadi

is a film archivist and film preservation and restoration specialist whose work focuses on the digitization, restoration and long-term preservation of archival and amateur films. She is currently part of the Bulgarian National Film Archive’s national digitization program, contributing to the preservation and digital accessibility of Bulgaria’s film heritage through restoration, digitization and quality control. Previously, she worked as an archivist at the German Broadcasting Archive (DRA) and gained experience in analogue film restoration, archival documentation, metadata management and film programming in audiovisual heritage institutions. Alongside her professional practice, Nasfadi is pursuing a doctorate in film at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, where her research focuses on film restoration and archival practice. She was also a participant in the 2026 Film Restoration Summer School of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF).
