‘Ostwärts’, D 1990, directed by Christian Petzold

For the monthly series “KineKiez”, four Berlin cinemas take turns selecting films from the archive of the Deutsche Kinemathek for their program. In February, the Kinemathek will visit Kino Krokodil in Prenzlauer Berg. Under the motto “Ostwärts” (eastwards), the film of the same name by Christian Petzold will be shown. He made it in 1990 as a DFFB student, shortly after German reunification. Along the Bundesstraße 2, one of Germany’s oldest federal highways, he documents the social upheaval of the time.

In the same year, the East-West German directing collective Blick ins Land set out to depict everyday life and the impact of reunification on people. Using footage from Berlin and Thuringia and interviews with various social groups, they created a unique snapshot of this historic period. Workers, a teacher, her students, and a Stasi psychologist share their experiences of the changes and conflicts that continue to resonate to this day.
