These three documentaries, made at the East German film school HFF, provide an unusual view into the workaday world of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Both ‘Ein Herbst im Ländchen Bärwalde’ (GDR, 1983, directed by Gautam Bora) and ‘Glück auf – Bilder einer Begegnung’ (GDR, 1981, directed by Rainer Burmeister) were made with the partici- pation of foreign students. The Burmeister film follows a group of young people who came to East Germany from Mozambique. ‘Meiningen Meiningen’ (GDR, 1980, directed by Gudrun Steinbrück and Julia Kunert), shot in dusky black and white, is a portrait of working life in the country’s ex- press trains.

Under commission from the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf, Munich’s Pharos – The Post Group digitized and restored the films in 4K. For the color films, the restorers used the original 16mm reversal print and the magnetic sound master tapes. A 16mm print and separate sound tape was used for ‘Meiningen Meiningen’.
