This film follows a young man named Nicola who leaves Sicily to work at the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg. He falls in love with Brigitte, which helps him survive the xenophobic humiliations he suffers as a guest worker. But when she deserts him, a toxic mix of aggrieved honor, loneliness, and alienation explodes. Awarded the Berlin Film Festival’s Golden Bear, Werner Schroeter’s epic film combines documentary-like passages with operatic scenes to shine a satirical light on Germany and its work ethic.
