 hibits this and doctors turn her away. Hete obtains the film’s eponymous c
 yanide from an “Angel Maker”\, a backstreet abortionist… A film about the 
 deadly risks of abortion in the Weimar Republic and a scathing indictment 
 of Section 218\, as well as of the dire economic straits faced by the work
 ing class. Public advocacy for abortion rights became possible for the fir
 st time during the Weimar era\, but remained itself fraught with risk: ‘Cy
 ankali’ sparked fierce controversy from both the censorship board and audi
 ences\, and the film’s approval certificate was repeatedly renegotiated\,
